BGC Celebrates 90th Anniversary

90th Anniversary

TYLER, Texas, Aug. 31, 2018 – Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) will celebrate 90 years of serving customers and communities on Sept. 1.

BGC was founded by Wood T. (W.T.) Brookshire, who opened the company’s first store on Sept. 1, 1928, in downtown Tyler, Texas. W.T. believed it was his calling to serve people through the grocery business and built BGC on a strong foundation of core values that continue to guide the company today.

In 90 years, BGC has grown from one store to over 180 locations in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas under the Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, FRESH by Brookshire’s and Spring Market banners. Following the founder’s example, BGC remains deeply committed to serving customers and the 150 communities where it operates stores.

Each year, the company’s giving program assists hundreds of nonprofit organizations that support its primary causes of hunger relief, education, family health and wellbeing, and military heroes and first responders. Employees collectively volunteer 20,000 hours annually assisting communities and nonprofit organizations.

In the past 30 years, the Brookshire’s Benefit Golf Tournament has awarded more than $5.5 million to nonprofits that serve causes the company supports. BGC’s Heroes Flight program has escorted more than 400 World War II veterans on all-expenses paid trips to Washington, D.C., to see the memorials dedicated to their service. BGC also hosts two annual races – the FRESH 15 in Tyler and the Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods Heroes Run in Shreveport. These races have raised more than $600,000 for charities since 2014. The company’s annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive assists approximately 16,000 households each year, providing about 500,000 pounds of food to people in need.

“We are very excited to be celebrating our 90th anniversary,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for Brookshire Grocery Co. “My grandfather founded Brookshire Grocery Company out of his passion for serving others. Today, our mission is still to create exceptional experiences and value for our customers through the core values our company was built upon. We look forward to many more years of serving our customers and communities.”

BGC celebrates grand openings, new curbside service and Ragin’ Cajuns’ partnership

Ragin Cajuns

TYLER, Texas, Aug. 1, 2018 – Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) hosted ribbon-cutting ceremonies July 18 to commemorate the grand openings of seven newly converted Super 1 Foods stores in South Louisiana. In conjunction with these events, the Company introduced “Super 1 Foods Curbside” at 11 area stores and announced that Super 1 is now the Official Grocery Store of University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajuns athletics program.

The new stores resulted from the acquisition of eight Winn-Dixie stores from Southeastern Grocers in April. After a brief three-day transition, the stores reopened as part of the Super 1 Foods banner. Since then, the stores have been undergoing renovations including new signage, paint, flooring, point of sale systems, checkstands and equipment. The Company now operates 47 Super 1 Foods stores in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

“We are celebrating Brookshire Grocery Company’s 90th anniversary this year, and growing our retail footprint is one of our primary areas of focus,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for BGC. “We are excited about our expansion in the South Louisiana region with the opening of these stores and look forward to additional growth.”

BGC first launched curbside service in late 2017 at its FRESH by Brookshire’s store in Tyler, Texas. Curbside was then introduced at a Super 1 Foods store in Tyler in June. Since then, the Company has expanded curbside to 17 additional stores and plans to continue the rollout to select locations this year.

The Company entered into a partnership with Instacart in May and currently offers same-day home delivery at 43 stores in its Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and FRESH by Brookshire’s banners. BGC plans to expand delivery service to other locations as Instacart becomes available in those market areas.

Super 1 Foods’ agreement with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will include regular opportunities to support the Ragin’ Cajuns with special promotions and events in Super 1 Foods stores and at the stadium.

“As a Company, we continually evaluate opportunities to improve service and meet our customers’ evolving needs,” Brookshire said. “We are thrilled to offer online ordering, curbside pickup and home delivery, all of which add new levels of convenience to the shopping experience at our stores. Involvement in our communities has been a big part of who we are since 1928, and we look forward to partnering with UL-Lafayette to support the Ragin’ Cajuns.”

Heroes Flight dinner

TYLER, Texas, July 30, 2018 – World War II veterans and close to 150 of their family members gathered Thursday at Scott Events Center in Scott, Louisiana, to reunite and celebrate Brookshire Grocery Co.’s 16th Heroes Flight to Washington, D.C., which took place in May.

The Company provided dinner and presented the veterans with a memory book, a CD with more than 400 pictures, and a video of their trip on DVD, which was shown at the dinner. Company volunteers who assisted the veterans during the trip also attended.

Brookshire Grocery Co.’s WWII Heroes Flight is an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., provided by the Company to honor veterans for their service and sacrifices. BGC has taken 440 veterans from Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas to Washington, D.C., since establishing the program in 2010.

Twenty-four veterans, mostly from the Lafayette, Louisiana, area, were on the trip in May, and all but one served in World War II. The other was a Korean War veteran. Among the veterans on this trip were Joe Richard, a Pearl Harbor survivor; Hewitt Gomez, a Congressional Gold Medal recipient; and Wilson T. Robertson, who at age 102 is said to be the oldest living WWII veteran in Louisiana.

The Heroes Flight trip included visits to the WWII Memorial, U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery and the Air and Space Museum, along with memorials honoring the U.S. Marines, Navy, Air Force, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and Vietnam and Korean War veterans.

“Our Company is honored to provide the Heroes Flight to show our appreciation for our veterans’ tremendous courage and sacrifices,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for BGC, who spoke at the dinner. “Our Company is celebrating our 90th anniversary this year, and giving back to the communities that support our stores has always been a big part of who we are. Supporting military heroes is one of our primary areas of community focus and support. Proceeds from our annual Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods Heroes Run in downtown Shreveport helps provide for programs that benefit local first responders and military heroes.”

BGC’s 17th WWII Heroes Flight to Washington, D.C., will take place Nov. 8-10, with departures from Tyler, Texas, and Lafayette, Louisiana. Veterans interested in the trip can apply at brookshires.com/connect/giving-back/wwii-korean-veterans-heroes-flight/veteran-application-form/

(BGC) has announced that online ordering with curbside pickup is now available at the Super 1 Foods store in the Village at Cumberland Park, located at 172 Centennial Pkwy. in Tyler. The Company plans to expand the service to the other Super 1 Foods and Brookshire’s locations in Tyler later this year.

BGC first launched curbside service in late 2017 at the FRESH by Brookshire’s store on Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler. The Super 1 Foods store in the Village at Cumberland Park is the first of the company’s 47 Super 1 Foods locations to offer curbside service.

Customers can order, pay and schedule pick-up times at these two Tyler locations using the respective Super 1 Foods or FRESH by Brookshire’s websites or new mobile apps. Thousands of products are available, including fresh meats, local produce and the stores’ own brands of products, at the same prices as in the stores. Customers can save $10 on their first online order of $50 or more by using the promotional codes “SAVE” at Super 1 and “SUMMER” at FRESH.

The stores’ personal shoppers fill the orders, selecting the freshest products available and asking for recommendations when needed from the experts in the market, deli, bakery and produce departments. Personal shoppers then deliver orders to customers at the scheduled pick-up time in the designated curbside parking area.

Service hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, with same-day service available. To place an order for pickup at one of these two locations, customers can visit the respective websites, super1foods.com or freshbybrookshires.com. They can also use the new “Super 1 Foods” or “Fresh by Brookshire’s” mobile apps, available in the App Store or Google Play. There is a service fee of $4.95 for orders under $50 and no fee for orders of $50 or more.

“Online ordering with curbside pickup has been very popular with customers at FRESH, and we are excited to add this convenience for customers at Super 1 Foods,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for Brookshire Grocery Co. “Our company was founded 90 years ago in Tyler on the principle of ‘service,’ and we are thrilled to be including the option of curbside service for our customers.”

Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and FRESH by Brookshire’s stores and customers contributed a total of $100,000, and the Western Union Foundation gave an additional $25,000. The Company facilitated customer donations and partnered with the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana to assist in its relief efforts. More than a dozen BGC stores in the Shreveport area and East Texas also collected donations of food and household supplies.

“We are very thankful to our customers for their incredible generosity and support. Once again, they’ve helped us fulfill our mission of making communities better through our people, products, stores and service,” said Brad Brookshire, Chairman and CEO for Brookshire Grocery Company. “This donation will make a huge impact for thousands of people as they continue the work of rebuilding their lives and communities.”
